Imagine the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo meets Betty Crocker.
That's Pierce in a nutshell.
Pierce has been on the run for two years from the man who held her captive in a vampire compound for almost a decade. Life on the run would be a lot simpler if she didn't think she suffered from several social disorders and 'quirks,' have a ten-year-old brat in tow, as well as have two characters from a 1945 classic film living in her head and guiding her at every turn.

At first I was a bit hesitant when I started this one. The mental illness bits didn't match with what I know (and as someone dealing with the mental health field since 1995 I know a bit about it) and I almost put it down because of that. I'm so glad I didn't! Once it picked up and we really got into the meat of the story I couldn't walk away, and eventually my issues with the mental health bits were addressed. I actually shouted out loud when I realized I'd run out of book. I won't repeat what I said, it was not a nice word :PThe characters were REALLY well written. I sometimes have trouble, if there are many different people, keeping track of who is who until their name is used, but in this one I always knew who was speaking or acting even before that, they were so fleshed out and well defined and individual!
Now I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
One trigger warning that I wasn't clued in to ahead of time: There is some sexual trauma and abuse. It's in the main character's past, so we don't get graphic descriptions, but we do revisit the topic repeatedly. If that is something you find triggering, you might want to pass on this one. Mark down the author's name somewhere though: if she comes out with a series that doesn't have that, you'll want to read it. She's a terrific writer!

Pierced The Pierced Series Book 1 eBook J C Mells Reviews
Excellent urban fantasy, with a very complicated main character. There's no world building, as it all takes place in our world, but aspects of the paranormal start to unfold as Pierce begins to understand them. There's perhaps a bit too much description for my taste - it feels as if the plot bogs down in places - and the author consistently misuses the pronoun "I" (e.g., "he took Mia and I by the hand"), which is one of my pet peeves. (Would anyone ever say "he took I by the hand"? Then why would anyone think taking "Mia and I" is right?), but on the whole the writing is pretty good. There's a horrible cliff hanger (HATE those), but fortunately the next book is out, and I'm off right now to buy it.
Funny, action-packed paranormal, which I highly recommend.
Urban fantasy and paranormal are genres I enjoy reading. This book was interesting and unlike others, I didn't mind the first couple of chapters.
I can relate to the main character in as much as having early childhood traumas. I understand the Asperger aspect of her personality for I know someone with it.
Pierce is a strong minded individual. I love how she holds herself together for the sake of another. She is a tough girl but has a vulnerable side. Unfortunately the ones that appears to realize this is Mildred and Veda; the mother/daughter duo that lives within Pierce 's mind.
Miami, the ten- year old girl that Pierce ran away with to keep her safe is both a mini adult and a brat. The bratty side is typical of the age but since growing up in a Vampire compound, Kia has had to grow up differently. Not to mention being on the run with a person with "afflictions" tends to lead a person into growing up faster than normal.
And what can I say about Pink....except I love him. His character is strong enough to stand up for and up to Pierce. He has his own demons to deal with.
There is a hint of romance between Pierce and Pink but nothing manifests outright. The tease of romance to come is worth waiting for. The issues Pierce suffers from having her jump into bed with Pink would have been a bad move. I like to believe they can and will grow together and work out their demons together.
When I first started Pierced, I was a bit wary. Not only was Pierce on the run from an abusive man who lived in a vampire cult, she was schizophrenic and had "abilities". It was too much. The author would never pull it off. No way.
Wrong! I got so caught up in this book and the characters that I couldn't stop reading. I love Pierce and adore Pink.
Pink was painted with a brush full of moody, caring, self-loathing, cocky and protective all at the same time and having him wear the gay-friendly t-shirts is genius and adds an element to his character that he largely keeps hidden. He rarely speaks, but you learn so much about him through his actions and other's descriptions of him.
Pierce is unlike any heroine ever created, which makes me love her more with every word I read.
If you want to meet a cast of characters with real complexity and not a cookie cutter "helpless female" or "alpha male" then read this book. It will be so worth every minute you stay up past your bedtime to finish it!

It's been awhile since I downloaded a book I really liked, so it's good to be able to write a good review.
It's within the paranormal genre, I would guess, and it's not my usual pick, but my range is fairly eclectic and the short blerb that came with it in my e-books recommendations caught my interest, so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did.
This book follows the adventures of a deeply traumatized and troubled late teen girl, Pierce and her beloved charge, Mia. They have escaped from a vampire colony in NJ (of all places!) and have been on the run for 2 years. Pierce is suffering from mental illness brought on by trauma and a serious drug addiction forced on her as a control mechanism at the vampire colony. Finding out how Pierce handles the everyday fear of capture while providing for a 10 year old and handling her multiple issues was captivating. As the book progresses, Pierce is able to allow others into her fight for survival and her responsibility of care for Mia. It's a hard-earned battle, however and I highly recommend you take a chance on the book and find out the details.
I loved Pierce. Fortunately, I can't relate to her level of trauma and dysfunction, but I just love her spirit. I love her determination to keep evil from winning and the courage of her can't-be-quenched spirit.
Looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!
